Romulus and Remus Turn One: A Birthday Cake, a Rock Anthem, and a Pack That’s Thriving

Colossal Biosciences marks a milestone year for the world’s first functionally de-extincted dire wolves

One year after making history, Romulus and Remus are healthy, growing, and very much at home on their 2,000-acre preserve. The brothers now weigh more than 120 pounds each and are consuming over five pounds of meat daily as they continue developing natural pack behaviors. To celebrate, Colossal partnered with Emmy Award-winning musicians Stan Bush and Lenny Macaluso, who created an original rock anthem called “Happy Birthday Dire Wolf,” and with San Francisco luxury dog bakery Mishka on a custom three-tiered enrichment cake. “We’ve witnessed their physical, emotional, and social growth — something no one has seen in 12,500 years,” said Chief Animal Officer Matt James. Chief Science Officer Beth Shapiro added that the dire wolves are “thriving — beyond anything we could have imagined.”
