From Westeros to the Wild: How Game of Thrones Helped Inspire the Real Dire Wolf’s Return
Den of Geek explores the cultural thread connecting fantasy storytelling and cutting-edge de-extinction science
When George R.R. Martin first saw the dire wolf pups over a Zoom call with Ben Lamm, he took off his glasses and started to cry. “I have the luxury of writing about magic,” he told Lamm, “but you, Ben, have created magic.” It’s a moment that captures something Den of Geek explores at length: the unexpected but powerful connection between the cultural mythology of the dire wolf and the science that brought it back. Lamm told Den of Geek that the entire process, from exploring whether the dire wolf could be revived to the birth of Romulus and Remus, took just 18 months. Using ancient DNA from fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years, Colossal reconstructed the dire wolf genome and introduced targeted edits to recreate the species’ defining characteristics, including its white coat, larger build, and distinctive vocalizations. The female pup was named Khaleesi rather than Lady, Lamm noted with a smile, because “Lady died, and that’s sad.”
